Climbing the ladder of success in the GCSAA certification program

The GCSAA certification program was designed to help superintendents substantiate their work and accomplishments as well as acknowledge their expanding knowledge of the industry through ongoing professional development.
Since the program’s inception in 1971, GCSAA has bestowed the professional designation “CGCS” — Certified Golf Course Superintendent — to 2,937 superintendents, of which 1,948 continue to be currently active in the industry. Recipients of this designation have met the highest standard of professional excellence through experience, education, testing and performance in the profession of golf course management.
To maintain this level of excellence, certification status must be renewed every five years, requiring 150 hours of training and professional development. Of those currently active, 398 have retained their certification status for more than 15 years, 130 have retained it for more than 20 years, 62 have celebrated their 25th anniversary and 11 have reached the 30-year-plus mark. The program maintains an average of 100 applicants a year, with the number of superintendents certified representing 21 percent of the GCSAA’s Class A membership.
GCSAA welcomed the opportunity to honor all certified superintendents at the annual Certification Luncheon and Business Meeting held Feb. 11 during the GCSAA Education Conference and Golf Industry Show in Orlando. The 2005 luncheon, presented in partnership with Syngenta Professional Products, honored all CGCSs for their commitment to continuing education. Special recognition was given to individuals having renewed their certification for the third, fourth, fifth and sixth times, applauding their years of dedication to lifelong learning. The 111 members of the newly certified Class of 2004 were recognized and presented their certification credentials.
