Forward motion

Those of you who have been members of GCSAA for any length of time know that the association is characterized by one constant — forward motion.

In the past year, we’ve seen that movement on a number of fronts. One of the most important endeavors we’ve been involved in is the recently completed member needs assessment, a survey whose objective was to see how members rate their satisfaction with GCSAA programs and to identify the key components that influence members’ satisfaction with those programs and services. You will be hearing a lot more about this in the coming months.

Another extremely important activity has been the campaign to establish in the marketplace a brand for GCSAA Class A superintendents and for GCSAA itself. We began this effort last year, and 2007 will see considerable efforts and resources dedicated to it.

One of the responsibilities of GCSAA’s board of directors is to document for members the association’s forward motion, both philosophically and financially. That’s done, in part, through annual reports.

That responsibility is achieved with the 2006 annual reports for GCSAA and our philanthropic organization, The Environmental Institute for Golf, included in the back of this issue of GCM. The reports reflect the fact that our members are hungry for success and committed to investing the time and resources required to achieve it.

As you may know, the board of directors has defined a series of specific indicators to measure our progress toward achieving GCSAA’s vision. We’ve developed strategies and applied resources to do the following: provide opportunities and support that enable our members to achieve career success; advocate for our members, the industry and the game of golf; contribute to golf facility success by providing relevant continuing education and information; and thrive as a strategic, inclusive and responsive organization.

From the beginning of the transformation from the GCSAA Foundation, The Environmental Institute for Golf’s mission was clear, and it has dedicated itself to enhancing the compatibility of golf with the natural environment. Annual contributions have increased significantly, which has allowed The Institute to increase block grants that fund GCSAA’s environmental programs, curriculum development and research.

In addition, Edge, an online tool, has compiled research results, case studies and best management practices related to golf and the environment, and the Golf Course Environmental Profile, a multi-year project, is gathering data on golf courses’ physical characteristics and environmental practices.

As the annual reports show, we are making progress. GCSAA is accountable to its members and The Institute to its supporters. Please read the 2006 annual reports carefully, and look back at GCSAA’s work this past year.
