Phil A. Bersin, 63, died March 23, 2008. Mr. Bersin became a GCSAA member in 1968 and a Class A member in 1972. Born in 1944 in Quincy, Ill., Mr. Bersin worked on the maintenance staffs at Cedar Crest CC and Quincy CC in his hometown. He attended college at Western Illinois University, transferred to Penn State and received a degree in agronomy in 1966. He started his professional career as assistant superintendent at Olympia Fields (Ill.) CC. Two years later, he received a commission from a Chicago real estate developer to design a new golf course in a Chicago suburb and oversaw construction and development of Carriage Greens CC in Darien, Ill. After the club’s construction, he became superintendent of the course, a position he held for more than 30 years until his retirement. Mr. Bersin was also a member of the PGA of America. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sylgar and Lorene Bersin, and survived by his companion, Marilyn Malanca; his sister, Therese Cummings; his brother Jeffrey Bersin; one niece; two nephews; and his brother Stanley Bersin, 9522 W. Pellinore, Mapleton, IL 61547.

Clint Chaney, 35, died Jan. 27, 2008. A seven-year affiliate member of GCSAA, Mr. Chaney was born in 1972 in Ohio and moved to Bradenton, Fla., in 1997. He worked at a number of golf courses and golf-related companies in the Florida region during his career. In 1998, he became assistant superintendent of TPC Prestancia in Sarasota. He worked there for five years until 2003, when he became superintendent at Club at Admirals Cove/The Golf Village in Jupiter. Then in 2007, he moved to Show Turf of South Florida LLC in Riviera Beach, Fla., where he worked as sales manager of golf course irrigation systems. Mr. Chaney was an active member of his church and loved fishing, playing the guitar and golfing. He is survived by his father, John Chaney; mother, Debbie Chaney; his brother, Clift Chaney; his sister, Christen Chaney; and his wife, Angie Chaney, 105 147th St. NE, Bradenton, FL 34212-1669.

Barclay Whetsell, 74, died Dec. 18, 2007. Mr. Whetsell, a 47-year GCSAA member, began working in golf course management in the 1950s for Goose Creek CC, Leesburg, Va., and Preston G&CC, Kingwood, W.Va. In the 1960s he worked at Westbriar CC in Vienna, Va., Tantallon CC in Washington, D.C., and Twin Lakes GC in Clifton, Va. In 1978 he went to work for the Fairfax County Park Authority, where he stayed for 11 years until his retirement in 1989. He received his 25-year GCSAA member pin in 1985. Mr. Whetsell was preceded in death by his sons, Barclay Whetsell Jr. and Mark Whetsell; and two brothers. He is survived by a daughter, Donna Sheehan; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Whetsell; five sisters; three grandsons; and his wife, Shirley Whetsell, 7491 Pembelton Dr., Amelia Court House, VA 23002-2855.
