Joseph S. Felus, 70, died Nov. 30, 2007, after a battle with kidney cancer. Born in 1937, Mr. Felus got his start in the golf industry at age 7, caddying at Summit CC in Cresson, Pa. He worked at a number of Pennsylvania golf courses over his career, including Summit CC in Crosson, Eagle Lodge CC in Lafayette Hill, North Hills (Pa.) CC, Huntington Valley CC and Iron Masters CC in Roaring Springs. In 1970, he went to work for Sandy Run CC in Oreland, Pa., where he remained until 1974 when he started work at Whitemarsh Valley CC in Lafayette Hill near Philadelphia. Then, in the mid-80s, Mr. Felus, a 38-year GCSAA member, moved to Jeffersonville GC in Norristown and worked there until his retirement in 2005. A scratch golfer, Mr. Felus played frequently and scored at least 20 holes-in-one in his lifetime. He also served in the U.S. Army and received a Soldier of the Year award. He was preceded in death by his brothers Steve and Francis. Mr. Felus is survived by daughters Earlene and Cindy; granddaughters Karina and Brittany; three sisters, Louise (Bill) Ruzzi, Rose Devett and Sandra (George) Diehl; two brothers, John and Anthony Felus; and his wife of 44 years, Darlene Felus, 810 Wilson St., Gallitzin, PA 16641.

Harry Meusel, 84, died March 2, 2008. A 51-year member of GCSAA, Mr. Meusel worked as superintendent at the Yale GC at Yale University, New Haven, Conn., from 1951 until his retirement in 1993. He also worked for the New Haven Park Department. A recipient of the Connecticut AGCS’s Superintendent of the Year Award in 1989, Mr. Meusel applied his life-long interest in Japanese gardens to the aesthetic of the golf course and loved working with plants, trees, soil and rocks. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Gladys Hofmann Meusel, who died in 2001. Mr. Meusel is survived by his daughter, Shelley Carpenter; his son, Jeffrey Meusel; his brother, Fritz; and his granddaughter, Esther Meusel.

Samuel H. Smith, 83, died Feb. 28, 2008. A 33-year GCSAA member, Mr. Smith was born in 1924 and served in the United States Air Force from 1942 through 1969. He was a POW in WWII in Germany for 14 months and also served in the Korean War and Vietnam. He started working in golf course maintenance in 1970 when he began as an assistant superintendent at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Ga. He stayed there until 1973, when he went to work at Tam-O-Shanter CC in Roswell, Ga. In 1979, the club was renamed Willow Springs CC, where he worked until his retirement in 1991. Mr. Smith is survived by daughter Debra Evans; daughter and son-in-law Cindy and Jonathan Finck; four grandchildren, Kyle, Cody, Taylor and Pride; and son, Richard Smith, 202 Streamside Drive, Roswell, GA 30076.
