He’s the most successful Ryder Cup player ever. Now he’s the captain of the European team.

Nick Faldo, the Ryder Cup’s all-time leading point-scorer, is set to lead his team against the Americans this month at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky. He’s played under five different captains himself, so he’s picked up a few tips along the way.

Not that he needs them. Aside from his success in the Ryder Cup, Faldo has six majors to his credit — three British Opens (1987, 1990 and 1992) and three Masters titles (1989, 1990 and 1996) — along with 31 international victories. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1998.

Faldo last made an appearance as a player at the 2007 British Open. He now spends most of his time in the broadcast booth, as the lead golf analyst for CBS.

— Seth Jones, senior associate editor

"When you think that you’ve got a hundred acres of finely mown grass and another hundred acres of intermediate and the quality that we’re playing off nowadays — it’s perfection. Over the last 15 years players have really been spoiled.

I do (talk during broadcasts about course conditions) because when people play it’s high on their list of priorities — someone might not truly appreciate the intricacies of a design, but the quality of the mowing and the condition of the course is something that everyone can appreciate. It’s often the first or second thing that a player will comment on when they visit a course. "
