Golf course superintendents have long been among the most informed and conscientious users of turfgrass inputs — pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fertilizers — in the marketplace. Frankly, the job demands nothing less. But current economic stresses and increased regulatory pressures are forcing superintendents to work harder in an effort to strike the right balance when it comes to chemical usage.

In this issue of GCM, senior staff writer Terry Ostmeyer explores this issue and exactly how superintendents are walking this increasingly challenging tightrope. Also, senior associate editor Seth Jones sets the stage for this month’s PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club near Minneapolis.

This month’s cover photo, by Peter Wong Photography, features the 3rd hole at Hazeltine.
