Seed update 2009
This year’s list of newly released turfgrass varieties for golf course use.
Teresa Carson
Each year GCM publishes a list of new named turfgrass varieties suitable for golf courses. These varieties have been released since the publication of last year’s seed update, or they will be released later in 2009. GCM makes every effort not to duplicate varieties featured previously.
The varieties are arranged in alphabetical order by species with the exception this year of the fine fescues, which are grouped together. In some cases the experimental name used in the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program follows the variety name. The description of each variety is provided by the company that markets it. GCM does not publish NTEP results, other trial results, numerical data or comparisons. More information about the varieties is available from the contributing companies and the research organizations and universities listed on Page 88.
In this year’s list, Kentucky bluegrasses and tall fescues predominate. For more information on these cultivars, see “Kentucky bluegrass types” by Leah Brilman (GCM, May 2007, Page 63) and “Establishment rate and lateral spread of tall fescue cultivars” by Rodney St. John, Jack Fry, Dale Bremer and Steve Keeley (GCM, February 2009, Pages 113-118).
