David S. Downing II, CGCS, David S. Downing II, CGCS, completed his term as GCSAA’s 72nd president, Feb. 6, 2009, at the association’s annual meeting in New Orleans. He will serve on the GCSAA board of directors as immediate past president until the February 2010 annual meeting in San Diego.

A 29-year GCSAA member, Downing was first elected to serve on the board of directors in 2002. He is currently the Vice President of Operations & Construction at Signature Golf Group in Surfside, S.C. Previously, he was golf course superintendent at Rivers Edge Golf Club in Shallotte, N.C. He has also served as director of golf operations at The Pearl Golf Links and Ocean Isle Beach Golf Course in Shallotte, N.C., the senior vice president of operations at Avestra in Pinehurst, N.C., the director of golf course operations at the Barefoot Resort & Golf in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and at Wild Wing Plantation in Conway, S.C.; and golf course superintendent of the Las Vegas Country Club in Las Vegas, Nev.; Tournament Players Club at River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn.; Kennett Square Country Club in Kennett Square, Pa.; and Williamsport Country Club in Williamsport, Pa.

A native of Reedsville, Pa., Downing received a turfgrass management certificate from Penn State University in University Park, Pa., in 1977.

Downing and his wife, Jo, have three children: Michael, Hayley and Alex.
