At the Annual Meeting and Election Feb. 6, held
during the GCSAA Education Conference and Golf
Industry Show in New Orleans, members elected

James R. Fitzroy, CGCS, was elected vice president;
and Robert M. Randquist, CGCS, was elected secretary/treasurer.
Peter J. Grass, CGCS; Keith A. Ihms, CGCS; and
John J. O'Keefe, CGCS, were elected directors.
Patrick R. Finlen, CGCS, and Sanford G. Queen,
CGCS, remain on the board for the second year
of their two-year terms. David S. Downing II,
CGCS, will serve an additional year as immediate
past president.
GCSAA
discontinues regional education programs Effective Jan. 1, GCSAA will no longer
administer the Chapter-hosted Regional Seminar Program
and the Superintendent Leadership Series, with the
exception of program requests that were previously
submitted by chapters for 2009. After a comprehensive
examination of regional education, it has become
clear that local educational opportunities have
grown considerably in recent years, and there is
no longer a need for GCSAA to offer these programs.
The majority of chapters that participated in the
past are now conducting their own education programs
and/or have affordable, accessible education events
in their areas. Read

GCSAA Excellence in Government Relations Award goes
to Tim Hiers, CGCS A 2009 EGR Award was presented at the Golf
Industry Show in New Orleans to Tim Hiers, CGCS
for his exceptional commitment to government relations
in the area of advocacy. Hiers, a member of the
Everglades GCSA and Florida GCSA has served as chairman
of the GCSAA Methyl Bromide Task Group since 2006.
The task group has worked to preserve golf course
use of methyl bromide, supply the U.S. EPA with
economic impact data related to the loss of methyl
bromide, and assist with submission of annual critical
use exemption applications to the agency. He also
helped prepare GCSAA’s official response to
the EPA’s methyl bromide Reregistration Eligibility
Decision (RED), which would remove golf course use
of methyl bromide from the label. Congratulations
to Tim Hiers, CGCS!

Does
your chapter have an assistant superintendent on its board
of directors?
How about
an assistant superintendent committee? Chapters that are reaching
out to their assistant superintendent members are seeing the
return on their investment with an increase of participation
in meetings/events and volunteers.
The GCSAA
Assistant Superintendent Committee has created a proposal
that chapter leaders and executives can use to help them decide
whether or not they would like an assistant superintendent
to be a board member. The proposal also discusses assistant
superintendent committees. Read
on.
Congratulations
to Alexis Wenker, GCSAA Assistant Superintendent Committee
member, and assistant superintendent at the Oswego Lake Country
Club in Oswego, Ore. Wenker used the proposal created by the
committee to persuade the Oregon GCSA to create a position
on their board of directors for an assistant superintendent.
Wenker is the newest member of the OGCSA Board of Directors.
Each month,
GCSAA provides membership reports of
