Midwest chapter hits the airwaves

This is the third in a series of articles highlighting chapters that have received Chapter Outreach Grants and the outcome of their efforts. The program began in 2008, and chapters have used funds from GCSAA in a variety of innovative ways. Learn more about the program and how to apply for a grant.

The Midwest Association of Golf Course Superintendents is on the air. The MAGCS used the funds received through the 2008 Chapter Outreach Grant program to purchase segments on a local cable golf show called “The Golf Scene” hosted by Steve Kashul. “The Golf Scene” has a strong following in the greater Chicago area as it highlights local golf courses, offers golf tips and provides local golf news.

The focus of the MAGCS’s outreach plan was to highlight the profession and its Chicago-area members in a way that would bring an immediate impact.

Luke Cella, MAGCS executive director, said positive results from the show came quickly.

“Overall, our first foray into TV was a success. Feedback from members and the golfing community was positive,” Cella said. “The impact we made was immediate and the information we provided was controlled by us.”

By arranging for their own airtime, the chapter did not have to wait for press releases to be picked up by the local media, and could tell stories showing the superintendent’s view of golf topics.

In addition, the TV time purchased by the chapter included additional coverage on www.thegolfscene.com.

The chapter plans to continue its television presence as well as venture into other areas to spread its message. In 2009, the chapter was awarded a second Chapter Outreach Grant to start producing turfcare podcasts designed to appeal to both the golfing and non-golfing public.

“MAGCS hopes to create a series of podcasts that will help explain and demystify what a golf course superintendent does, while also providing listeners with information they can use on their home lawns and turf,” Cella said.
