In the Spotlight...
Andrew Huffman, Kansas GCSA president
Tell us about your background. Where you were born, raised, etc.?
I was born in Paola, Kansas and graduated from high school in Osawatomie, Kansas. I currently live in Topeka, Kansas with my wife Traci.
How did you get started in the golf industry?
I got started when I was 16 at the Osawatomie Golf Course and worked for superintendent Brad Waggoner. I worked there throughout high school and college. I attended Kansas State University to pursue my career as a golf course superintendent and to receive my turf education.
Why did you join your local GCSAA chapter?
I joined the Kansas GCSA (KGCSA) because I felt it was important to my career to be involved and to get to know more superintendents.
Why did you run for the board of directors?
I was asked by several board members at the time and felt that it would be a good way to become more involved with the association.
What has been successful for the Kansas GCSA this year?
We had a volunteer work day for the town of Greensburg, Kansas, which was destroyed by a tornado in May. The golf course was one of the few things left standing, and it was in a way holding the town together. With the help of local vendors and our members of the KGCSA, we accomplished all of the club’s fall aerification, seeding and verticutting in one single day. It was a great day that helped a town in need after a major disaster.
