Tell us a little bit about your background.
I was born in Lafayette, Ind. I moved to Phoenix in 1980 and began working for a construction company rebuilding the old Valley Club Golf Course. This would be renamed the Phoenician Golf Club. After several years at golf course construction, I returned to the Phoenician Property in 1987. I have worked at several different properties in the area before taking my current position at Mesa Country Club.
I am married to my wonderful wife Beatriz and we have three children, Gabrielle, Jared and Jackson. We love to camp, ride the sand dunes in California and spend time in Puerto Penasco, Mexico.
Why did you decide to volunteer as a leader with the Cactus and Pine GCSA?
I had reached a point in my life when I had the time to give back, but I probably wouldn’t have made that leap to run if I hadn’t been asked. The president at the time asked me to run for the board. Lynn Cannon, who was executive director at the time, also talked to me about it.
What do you think has been the biggest benefit to you in serving on the board of directors?
I think it would have to be the great relationships and camaraderie. The networking that I have been able to do is such benefit to me and my facility. I feel that I can pick up the phone and call any of them if I had a problem or question.
The Cactus and Pine GCSA hosts numerous social events for its members. What do you feel is the benefit of these programs?
People are getting to know each other better and this leads to a strengthened sense of community. They are more comfortable approaching me as a board member with a question or a concern. They also are attending more meetings. I see a direct correlation between the social events and a more engaged membership.
