Advertising standards
These requirements apply to advertisements, inserts, promotional materials, direct mail or any other solicitation or business communication targeted at the golf course management marketplace. Golf Course Management magazine reserves the right to refuse publication of advertisements that do not follow these recommendations.
Professional appearance
Photographs depicting superintendents should portray professional dress and demeanor. For example, a golf shirt and slacks are considered the standard professional attire for a superintendent's day-to-day activities. Blue jeans, shorts, collarless shirts, T-shirts and hats with commercial advertising are not appropriate. Superintendents, including those with facial hair, must be well groomed. Sunglasses, when feasible, should be removed before taking a photograph for publication.
Sexism
The use of sexually exploitative language or images is not appropriate. Remember that women account for a significant and rapidly growing percentage of our marketplace.
Safe and legal practices
The use of products and equipment should be depicted and described according to accepted safety practices or standards set by law. For example, the application of a particular chemical product should be depicted according to the safety practices described on the label (including proper protective clothing, respirators, eye protection, etc.). Remember also that the language used to describe pesticide products is regulated under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). For example, under the law, advertisements cannot state that a product has been "approved" by the EPA or that it is "safe." When showing the use of motorized equipment, make sure to depict a user who is wearing the proper personal protective equipment (hearing protection, eye protection, hard hat, etc.) and following safety procedures.
Testimonials/use of "CGCS"
When using actual superintendents in testimonials, make sure to follow the guidelines on appearance. In addition, when the testimonial comes from a Certified Golf Course Superintendent, make sure to include "CGCS" following the person's name. Finally, if the name of the superintendent's course is listed in the ad, check periodically to ensure he or she is still employed by that facility.
Logo language
Advertisers who are corporate affiliate members of GCSAA are encouraged to use the affiliate member logo in ads and promotional materials. Please refer to the official GCSAA Affiliate Member logo usage guidelines for a complete list of details and logo downloads.
