At some point in their careers, most superintendents face the prospect of overseeing a renovation project on their golf courses. One of the most-debated aspects of those projects is whether to handle them in-house or turn to an outside contractor. In this issue of GCM, Senior Staff Writer Terry Ostmeyer examines that debate and the pluses and minuses of both sides. Also, Senior Associate Editor Seth Jones chronicles the experiences of a group of superintendents who spent their spring break helping out their industry brethren in New Orleans who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. This month’s cover photograph by Johnson Design PhotoGraphics features the 12th hole at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan., which is playing host to this month’s U.S. Senior Open. Stan George, CGCS, a 27-year GCSAA member, supervises maintenance at Prairie Dunes.
