GCM's Ask the Experts

Answers:

PHOTO A: The brown depressions on this green are at a municipal course in Arizona. A new delivery driver for a topdressing company was making a delivery to this golf course, and he asked the superintendent where to dump the load. The superintendent carefully explained to go down a dirt road until the driver saw a nice round area of green grass. In the middle of this grass area would be a red pole with a number 16 flag atop it, he continued. The superintendent told him this was where he should dump his load. Instead of delivering the material to a staging area beside the green, the driver followed the instructions to a T and dumped the entire load directly on top of the green, almost completely covering the flagpole and flag. This photo is after the topdressing had been removed; however, the tire tracks are still visible.

PHOTO B: The uneven putting surface was caused by an underground irrigation line break. The irrigation line was installed on the uphill side of this green. At some point in the late afternoon the day before a golf tournament, the pipe ruptured and ran for about two hours, undermining half of the green’s surface until discovered. Upon inspecting the green, the superintendent found that a portion of the green had become so saturated that the grass actually slid down the hill, causing this uneven surface. The superintendent painted the words “ground under repair” directly on this area and still held the tournament. After the tournament, multiple intense aerifications, along with wetting the soil and repeated rollings, were used to smooth out the area.
