CMAA joins the party The water in Anaheim feels great, and now the Club Managers Association of America is jumping into the Golf Industry Show pool. The CMAA now joins fellow presenting partners GCSAA and the National Golf Course Owners Association — along with supporting organizations the Golf Course Builders Association of America, the American Society of Golf Course Architects and the National Golf Foundation — in hosting one of the premier events of the golf industry. It was back in 2004 when CMAA announced its intentions to join the Golf Industry Show. The group had already committed to hosting its World Conference on Club Management and Exposition in New Orleans in 2005 and in Honolulu in 2006, therefore preventing them from joining the GIS until this year. Though the GCSAA, NGCOA and CMAA have joined to form one show, each group will retain autonomous education conferences that will run concurrently with the Golf Industry Show. GCSAA CEO Steve Mona, CAE, said that the partnerships exist, in part, because they expose more key industry people to the importance of the superintendent. “Our strong belief is that when someone who is not a direct participant in the golf course management industry attends conference and show, they are without exception tremendously impressed with the size and scope of it and the sophistication and professionalism of the golf course superintendent,” Mona said. “For years, we have been developing various means to bring employers and other influencers in golf to conference and show for that reason. With the NGCOA and CMAA now part of the Golf Industry Show, we will bring thousands of key influencers in golf closer to the golf course management profession — and thereby elevating the understanding and appreciation of its complexity and talent.” The CMAA is the professional association for managers of membership clubs. CMAA has more than 6,500 members who manage more than 3,000 country, city, athletic, facility, yacht, town and military clubs. CMAA CEO James B. Singerling, CCM, CEC, believes that the CMAA is getting involved with the Golf Industry Show at just the right time. For more on CMAA, visit www.cmaa.org. Team atmosphere Sticking with that team analogy, the first Golf Industry Show Team Day will be Friday, Feb. 23. From the point guard to the center — or in this case, the superintendents, the owner/operators of golf facilities, and the professional member of the golf course and club management industries — all will come together to celebrate the business of golf. Experts on teamwork will be on-hand on Team Day to talk about their keys to success when working with others. Pat Croce, best known for taking a mediocre Philadelphia 76ers team to the top of the standings, and Rob Morton, a program consultant for the Disney Institute, will share their wisdom on getting the most out of your team. Front-and-center on the trade show floor, keep an eye out for the Team Solutions Center, where teamwork will be the focus. Morton will speak again at the Team Solutions Center, and a presentation will be made by the American Culinary Federation Culinary Team USA, the official representatives for the United States in international culinary competitions. More events, appearances and activities will be announced down the road. Visit www.golfindustryshow.com for the most up-to-date schedule of events.
