Answers:

PHOTO A: These dark green stripes are not fertilizer, but paint. This photo was taken a couple of days before the World Golf Championships CA Championship at Doral. The tournament draws many spectators, and with that comes lots of trash. The club rents wire trash bag holders from an outside contractor, and they usually get a fresh coat of paint before the tournament each year. The wire trash frames were put on the turf in an inconspicuous area near the maintenance facility and painted. The green turf is a result of the overspray.

A thank you to Todd Evans, a Class A superintendent at Doral Resort and Country Club in Miami, for allowing me to take these photos.

PHOTO B: The brown turf was a result of vandalism. Someone spread a granular herbicide called Arsenal onto two of this golf course’s greens. One morning about a week later, the crew found the empty packaging in their shop parking lot. Apparently, someone wanted them to know what they did to the greens. It was on that day they started to see the effect on the greens. After contacting the manufacturer for some help, they punched holes and watered, sprayed charcoal and watered, sanded and watered, overseeded and watered and then hoped for the best. They roped off the areas and put signs explaining to the golfers that the damage was caused by vandalism. Most areas came back pretty well, however they did have to plug some spots and re-sod two areas about 3 feet square.
