Rounds 4 Research goes live June 6

Rounds of golf at more than 600 golf courses in 25 states and assorted travel packages will be available to the public for online bidding, June 6-16, offering access for golfers that otherwise might not have been possible.

Known as Rounds 4 Research, the auction is a venture of the Environmental Institute for Golf, the philanthropic arm of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. It is presented in partnership with the Toro Co. Funds generated from the auction will go to support research-based activities of GCSAA, its affiliated chapters and regional turfgrass organizations.

The auction, available through www.Rounds4Research.com, will include several packages for high profile golf events such as the 2014 Masters and U.S. Open golf tournaments, and destinations such as the Old Course at St. Andrews, Bay Hill Resort in Orlando and Camelback Resort in Scottsdale. Courses in the auction include Grand Cypress Resort (Fla.), Trump National Golf Club (N.Y.), Redstone Golf Club (Texas), Brae Burn Country Club (N.Y.), Stanwich Club (Conn.), Daniel Island Club (S.C.), Country Club of Georgia (Ga.), Victoria National Golf Club (Ind.), Southern Pines Golf Club (N.C.) and numerous others.

"Online auctions are popular because they provide entrance to some of the nation's top facilities, but they also offer golfers great deals on other high quality facilities that might not have national name recognition, but still offer an enjoyable experience," said GCSAA President Patrick R. Finlen, CGCS, director of golf at Olympic Club in San Francisco. "We believe those who go to the auction will be pleasantly surprised by the menu of courses available to them."

Finlen also noted that whether golfers realized it or not, their purchases are directly benefitting them and the game they love. Funds will be used by GCSAA and regional superintendents/turfgrass organizations to fund activities that lead to better course conditions.

"Surveys have time and again revealed that the golfer experience is based on course conditioning," Finlen says. "By investing the revenues from the auction in research-based activities, we can develop new grasses and management programs that can enhance conditions, but not at the expense of the environment and not as a result of spending more money on inputs such as labor, water, and plant products. This is a very necessary investment the golf industry - companies, associations and golfers alike - must make if the game and facilities are going to remain viable."
