Hanna gets TPI Honorary Membership Award
Renowned turfgrass breeder Wayne Hanna, Ph.D., has been given the Turfgrass Producers International Honorary Member Award.
Hanna, famous for the breeding work during a 30-year career with the USDA/ARS, is now retired from ARS but continues to work full-time as a professor and turfgrass breeder with the University of Georgia.

The TPI Foundation's Honorary Member Award is presented to individuals who have improved the turfgrass industry in a significant way. It is the highest honor the organization bestows.
Hanna was been responsible for the breeding and release of TifSport and TifEagle bermudagrass and TifBlair centipedegrass.
Hanna's other legacy, perhaps just as important as his breeding work, is the stringent oversight protocols for all of his new grasses. TifSport, TifEagle and TifBlair are patented varieties that can only be sold as certified sod, sprigs or seed and only by licensed sod producers who are required to become members of carefully monitored growers associations.
This has made certain that these grasses are grown, inspected and sold under a rigorous set of rules and guidelines designed to promote on-going purity and uniformity. This concern for the maintenance of varietal purity was a major factor leading to the development of the International Turfgrass Genetic Assurance Program.

Cleary names new president, sales rep.
Mary Ellen (Cleary) Warwick has been named president Cleary Chemical Corporation. She is a third-generation Cleary family member and succeeds her mother, Barbara Cleary, who has served as president for over 25 years.
I am pleased that my daughter has the same passion for this business as I do, Barbara Cleary says. It's a perfect time for the next generation to take the reins as Cleary enters a new era of growth. Mary Ellen will oversee the introduction of exciting new products and technologies in the turf and ornamental markets, in addition to leading the expansion of our service commitment through the growth of our sales force.
The company also announced the addition of Joe Chavarria as a technical sales representative serving both turf and ornamental customers in the Pacific Northwest.
He has more than 20 years of industry experience in the turf and ornamental markets, most recently with Simplot Partners.
