December Greenlinks case study now online

The Greenlinks from the EDGE featured case study for December is from Cutler Robinson, CGCS at Bayville Golf Club, Virginia Beach, Va.

Robinson and the club have worked with a local watershed group to improve water quality for the Lynnhaven River and Chesapeake Bay, showing the local community that the golf course can be and is part of the solution to the cleaning of the Lynnhaven River.

By being an environmental leader, Bayville Golf Club is able to help build relationships with watershed groups. Bayville Golf Club also provided outreach and educational opportunities that promoted the impact of environmental stewardship on golf courses and illustrated the facts about how their management practices enhance the environment.

The Greenlinks feature is hosted by David Phipps, GCSAA Class A member at Stone Creek Golf Club, Oregon City, Ore., with guest columnist Laurie Carroll Sorabella, executive director, Lynnhaven River NOW.

GCBAA Foundation Harley Davidson raffle set for GIS

The GCBAA Foundation has purchased a 105th anniversary Harley Davidson Heritage Softail Motorcycle for its 2008 raffle. Only 3,000 of these motorcycles were manufactured. The motorcycle manufacturers suggested retail price is $20,270.

Raffle tickets can be purchased from board members, by contacting the GCBAA office, in Orlando at the Winter meeting or Golf Industry Show booth #4577. Tickets are $20 each. Only 3,000 tickets will be sold. The GCBAA Foundation will use the profits for its expanded Sticks for Kids and Scholarship programs.

Apply now for National Wetlands Awards

Applications for the 2008 National Wetland Awards are due by Jan. 15, 2008.
The awards are presented annually to individuals who have excelled in wetlands protection, restoration, and education.

Award winners receive national recognition and attention for their outstanding efforts through coverage in the National Wetlands Newsletter, coordinated media outreach, and an awards ceremony on Capitol Hill.

The program is co-sponsored by the Environmental Law Institute, Environmental Protection Agency, Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, USDA Forest Service, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Federal Highway Administration, and NOAA Fisheries. The Environmental Law Institute coordinates the awards program, while our federal agency co-sponsors provide financial support, serve on the selection committee and participate in the ceremony.

Winners are selected by a widely representative committee composed of 12-18 wetlands experts from around the country, including representatives from each federal co-sponsoring agency, members of the conservation and business communities, and representatives from state and local governments. Actor Ed Begley Jr. to speak at Irrigation Show

Actor and environmentalist Ed Begley Jr. will be the keynote speaker at the Irrigation Association’s 28th International Irrigation Show in San Diego in December. Begley, who received six Emmy nominations for his role on the long-running television series "St. Elsewhere," currently hosts an environmental reality show "Living with Ed" on Home & Garden Television, which takes a humorous look at Begley’s personal crusade for environmental responsibility.
