Golf isn't a video game and shouldn't aspire to be. There is too much emphasis on the spectacular and too little on the walk in the park. It's never going to work until the average golfer accepts it. Superintendents' hands are tied. The average golfer watches Augusta and sees all that green and that's what they want. - Tim Liddy, golf course architect
Firefighter golf outing to honor nine Charleston firemen
Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday will host the seventh annual FDNY 9-11 Memorial Golf Outing, May 18-21, 2008. The outing is the world’s largest firefighter golf benefit and has raised more than $60,000 for the families of fallen firefighters. More than 600 firefighters from 27 states and Canada are expected to participate on 30 Grand Strand area courses during the week.
The 2008 tournament will be dedicated to the late Capt. Louis Mulkey and the Charleston, S.C., firefighters who lost their lives in a furniture store fire in West Ashley, S.C., last June. Mulkey had assisted with the Golf Outing each year by bringing members of his Charleston Fire Department to cook for all of the firefighters and their families at the picnic and awards ceremony. The FDNY 9-11 Memorial Golf Outing will honor Mulkey and the fallen Charleston firefighters in a special presentation at the April 21 picnic and awards ceremony.
Created by former New York City firefighter Kevin O’Brien, the FDNY 9-11 Memorial Golf Outing raises money for The Thomas Elsasser Fund and a holding account for a non-line-of-duty national fund.
"This event symbolizes what is special about being a firefighter," said O’Brien, director of the FDNY 9-11 Memorial Golf Outing. "The FDNY 9-11 Memorial Golf Outing was formed after Sept. 11, 2001, because we wanted to do something special for the countless firefighters who came to New York City to stand by our side during our time of need."
Registration is open until May 10 and the $390 entry fee includes four nights of accommodations, three rounds of golf, a Wednesday afternoon picnic and a FDNY golf shirt. Firefighters are invited to register by calling 877-411-FDNY or visit FDNYGolf.com for more information.

Take a virtual tour of the National Hurricane Center
A tour of the NOAA National Hurricane Center is now as close as your computer with the inauguration of a new virtual online tour of the famous forecast center.
The tour provides panoramic views of different areas of the facility, accompanied by audio and text descriptions. "This is an especially useful tool for students who are learning about tropical cyclones and weather forecasting," said Bill Read, director of NOAA’s National Hurricane Center. "It also shows how the different branches of our facility work together for the best possible forecasts."
Included in the virtual tour are the National Hurricane Center operations, the Tropical Analysis Forecast Branch operations, the Chief Aerial Reconnaissance Coordination - All Hurricanes, the Federal Emergency Management Agency liaison, Media & Seminar, NOAA Miami Regional Library, and the Miami National Weather Service forecast office.
"The center is busiest during the hurricane season, but is staffed every day around the clock during the offseason as well." said Chris Burr, director of the Tropical Analysis Forecast branch. "Visitors to the site will learn why this is so important, especially for marine interests."
Winning photos show passion for the environment
The EPA invited the public to share its best photos showing the agencies mission to protect human health and the environment. Hundreds responded, sending in nearly 750 photos. Entries depicted scenes from around the world, including the United States, Namibia, Malaysia and Antarctica.
An EPA panel of judges chose 10 finalists in each of the three categories and then the public picked the winners. To encourage participation and provide maximum public access, the contest was hosted on the photo sharing site Flickr.com.
Now the EPA has announced the winners, whose photos will be featured in a special gallery on the EPA Web site:
Enjoying the Environment: Richard Burkart, Battle Creek, Mich.
Protecting the Environment: Julie Larsen Maher, New York, N.Y.
Nature and Wildlife: Alex Saberi, London, England
