Norman wins GWAA’s Bartlett Award

Greg Norman, World Golf Hall of Fame member, and trustee and advisory council chairman of The Environmental Institute for Golf, has been honored with the Golf Writers Association of America’s Charlie Bartlett Award.

The award, named for the first secretary of the GWAA, is given to a professional golfer for unselfish contributions to the betterment of society. He will be honored at the GWAA Annual Awards Dinner April 9, in Augusta, Ga.

Norman is also an honorary member of GCSAA and the recipient of the 2008 Old Tom Morris Award.

His commitment to charity has spanned three decades with such diverse causes as children’s cancer research, relief to victims and families of Hurricane Katrina, the Tsunami and 9-11, ecosystem oceanic research and golf and the environment.

He has quietly aided charitable efforts including helping raise more than $10 million for charities, including the CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation and Ronald McDonald House. Norman has also lent his helicopter to Katrina Relief efforts and teamed with former Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush to benefit Tsunami Relief.

Norman’s Shootout supports several charities including CureSearch and Ronald McDonald House, while the Three Friends: One Goal event with Clinton and Bush raised more than $2 million. Norman participated in Hope Takes Flight, which helped raise $4 million for the University of Pittsburgh’s Hillman Cancer Center.

He was also involved in the Franklin Templeton Fiduciary Trust, benefiting the families of 9/11 victims; the Chris Evert Tennis Classic; Living Oceans Foundation; Environmental Institute for Golf and his own Greg Norman Junior Golf Foundation.

NYSTA presents awards

The New York State Turfgrass Association presented its Citation of Merit Award to James Hornung Sr., Buffalo, N.Y., past president of the association.

He was selected for his dedication to turfgrass research and education; involvement in and support of association activities; interest in promoting careers in the turfgrass industry; community involvement; and admiration and respect of peers and colleagues.

Larry Wilson, chairman of the New York Alliance for Environmental Concerns, was named NYSTA’s Friend of the Green Industry, given to individuals who have excelled in support of the industry.  As chairman of the alliance. Wilson has joined separate industry groups together to educate lawmakers and the public on the many benefits derived from environmental horticulture in New York.

Jacklin named vice-chair of ASTA committee

Gayle Jacklin of Simplot Turf and Horticulture has been named vice chairman of the Legislative and Legal Concerns Committee for the American Seed Trade Association.

Jacklin more than 15 years experience in turfgrass sales and marketing. She is active in several industry and civic organizations and serves on the Executive Board of the Atlantic Seedsmen’s Association. She is a former chairman of the American Seed Trade Association-Lawn Seed Division.

Deanna Duke named Jacobsen new product manager

Jacobsen has hired Deanna Duke as product manager for the fairway product category – a line that includes lightweight mowers available to customers in the golf and turf industries.

Duke has held management positions with Curtiss-Wright Controls, Nissan Motor Corp., Sea-Land Service and most recently, Goodrich Corp. as the company’s marketing communications manager.

She has also worked with Arthur Anderson Business Consulting and is a major in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.

E-Z-Go promotes Parkhurst to VP

E-Z-Go, has promoted of Michael Parkhurst to vice president, global sales, following the introduction of its new RXV fleet golf car.

Formerly vice president of golf channel and branch operations at E-Z-Go, Parkhurst will oversee the sales and service organizations including specialty, used, fleet golf, corporate accounts, parts & accessories and customer care. The promotion is part of the company's effort to grow its business through the fleet, consumer and secondary transportation markets.
