GIS to feature free skin cancer screening
If you made a new year’s resolution to take better care of yourself, you need to take advantage of the skin cancer screening at booth 5145 during the Golf Industry Show, Jan. 31- Feb. 2.
Dr. Brent Moody, Dr. William Henghold and Dr. Brad Kovach have all volunteered to conduct free screenings during the trade show, and Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen has also donated samples for all those who get screened.
GCBAA Foundation to add 170 Sticks for Kids programs
Following the establishment of 100 new Sticks for Kids programs in 2007, the Golf Course Builders Association of America Foundation says an additional 170 programs will be added in 2008, with the commitment of 100 more programs to be added in 2009.
"The GCBAA Foundation started the Sticks for Kids program as a way to ensure the future of the game by exposing young people to golf and life values it represents," Bill Kubly, foundation president, said. "It is a way to give back something to the game that we all love and depend on."
The addition will bring the total number of programs to 280. Sticks for Kids is now conducted in 48 states and eight military bases. Last year, more than 20,000 children nationwide were trained through Sticks for Kids seminars.
Ten sets of golf clubs with bags are donated to each hosting program. In 2007, it's estimated that donated clubs were used more than 15,000 times by junior golfers in programmed and pre-planned golf events.
The Foundation has also initiated a new scholarship program designed for students interested in pursing golf course construction industry curriculums offered at 20 different universities. Thanks to additional matching scholarships provided by GCBAA members, a total of 37, scholarships for $1,000 were awarded last year.
The deadline for submitting nominations for the 2008 National Wetlands Awards Program has been extended to January 31. The awards program honors individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the conservation and restoration of our nation's wetlands.
