One natural hazard, however, which is more or less of nuisance, is water. Water hazards absolutely prohibit the recovery shot, perhaps the best shot in the game. -- William Flynn

Deadline approaching for Custom Chopper raffle

The deadline to buy raffle tickets for the Cactus and Pine GCSA's unique custom chopper isn't far away. Potential winner have until April 19 to buy the $20 tickets.

Proceeds of the ticket sales will benefit The First Tee of Phoenix. The custom chopper, built by Evolution Custom Cycles in Tempe, Ariz., features a unique golf theme and has an estimated value of $50,000.

Raffle tickets will be sold for $20, and will be available for purchase anywhere the chopper is being displayed.  Tickets also can be purchased directly through the Cactus and Pine GCSA by calling 480-609-6778 or at http://www.cactusandpine.org/.

Incorporated into the design of the chopper were several golf course superintendent "tools of the trade".  Many of the tools utilized in the bike are very noticeable; however, some require a more detailed eye.

The most easily identifiable is the handlebars and headlight assembly, made from a lever-eject cup cutter.  The spokes in the chopper's custom wheels are Stimpmeters and the foot pegs are aerifier tines. The air cleaner is a regulation cup setting tool and lastly, the exhaust is modeled after a leaf blower discharge chute.

Rain Bird accepting entries to film competition

Rain Bird is giving amateur and experienced filmmakers the opportunity to showcase their talents.

The 2008 Intelligent Use of Water film competition invites filmmakers to increase awareness of the need for responsible water usage. The competition accepts all narrative, documentary, animated, experimental and/or student-made short films (1-10 minutes in actual or excerpted run time) that explore methods and ideas to responsibly manage and utilize the earth's most precious resource.

Films submitted online at www.IUOWFILM.com will be reviewed by a judging panel made up of film and water management experts. Finalists will be selected and invited to a special screening event on Oct. 11, 2008 in Los Angeles. Shalini Kantayya, director of the 2007 Audience Choice Award winner, A Drop of Life, will serve as master of ceremonies.

Following the screening at the Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden, Rain Bird will announce the winners and award cash prizes of $6,000 for the Jury Award and $3,000 for the Audience Choice Award.

All entries must be submitted electronically as a .mov, .wmv or .mpg file no later than 11:59 PM (PDT) on Sept. 1, 2008, for consideration.  Visit www.IUOWFILM.com for more information.

EPA says, "Show us your best photo for Earth Day"

The EPA is looking for photos that illustrate the concepts of Earth Day. Has your organization cleaned up a stream? Have you enjoyed a day in the woods? Has a wild animal ever sparked your imagination?

If you have anything like those moments captured in a photo, share it with the EPA.  The agency wants to see how people would illustrate its mission to protect human health and the environment. The goal is to get the best photos in three categories:

  • Enjoying the environment
  • Protecting the environment
  • Nature and wildlife

To encourage participation and provide maximum public access, the contest will be hosted on the photo sharing site Flickr.com.  People around the world are encouraged to enter.

Entries to the contest are due March 24. On April 1, finalists will be announced and public voting will begin. On April 15, the voting ends with the winners announced on Earth Day, April 22. Finalist and winning photos will be featured on EPA's Web site. Full details about the contest, including how to enter are at http://www.epa.gov/earthday/photocontest.
