Palm Beach superintendents sweep Florida GCSA championships

The Palm Beach Chapter of the Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association swept the team and individual honors by edging out the Central Florida Chapter by one shot in the 12th Annual Florida GCSA Golf at Southern Dunes Golf Club Sept. 27.
 
Led by GCSAA superintendent member Deron Zendt’s low medalist round of 2-under score of 70, the Palm Beach #1 Team had a gross total of 308. Team members were Zendt, Banyan G.C.; GCSAA superintendent member Steve Bernard, Adios G.C.; GCSAA Class A superintendent Mark Henderson, Gulfstream G.C., and GCSAA superintendent member Mark Heater, Addisson Reserve C.C.

Zendt’s individual victory qualifies him for the Florida GCSA team to compete in the GCSAA Golf Championship at Gulf Shores, Ala. Joining Zendt on the Florida team will be: Steve Bernard; GCSAA Class A superintendent Seth Strickland, Miami Shores G.C. and GCSAA superintendent member Blair Kirby, PGA National.

Myrtle Beach Hall of Fame directors include GCSAA members

The Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame has named it first board of directors and it includes GCSAA members.

The seven-member board was created to establish the bylaws and guidelines for Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame; review membership nominations submitted annually and select the most qualified candidates.
 
The inaugural board consists of:

  • Tracy Conner, general manager of the Tee Time Network
  • Clay DuBose, CGCS, immediate past president of the Palmetto GCSA
  • David Durant, president of the Myrtle Beach Golf Course Owners Association
  • A.J. Gohil, president of the Grand Strand Golf Directors Association
  • Ron Schmid, executive director of the Carolinas PGA
  • John Springs, chairman of the Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday Board
  • Bob Swezey, executive vice president of resort and golf operations for Burroughs & Chapin. He will serve as the executive director of the board

GCSAA President David Downing, CGCS, was appointed as a director at large in a non-voting capacity through 2011.

The Hall of Fame will be situated in Pine Lakes International Country Club's new Hall of Fame Garden adjacent to the newly renovated clubhouse, and is scheduled to open in March 2009 in conjunction with the reopening of Pine Lakes.

Four to six inductees will be honored in the inaugural year, and additional inductions will begin in April 2010.
