The Asia-Pacific region represents the most exciting frontier for the growth of golf. In fact, its potential for expansion is exponential given the development of golf in China, South Korea, Vietnam, Southeast Asia and India. China, in particular, is a market set for dramatic development. There are currently 600 golf courses open in China, with another 100 under construction. By 2020, the China Golf Association predicts that the number of courses in the country will increase to 2,700, catering to 20 million players.

To help you successfully navigate the burgeoning Asian market, GCSAA has put together Roadmap to Asia to provide you with information you need to effectively develop your company within the Asia-Pacific marketplace.

Introduction to the Asia-Pacific Golf Industry

GCSAA

In this session, attendees will receive an overview of the state of the industry in the Asia-Pacific region, including the latest statistics from the National Golf Foundation, growth models for course construction from the China Golf Association and a look at the impact golf's debut as an Olympic sport may have on future growth. Also included will be an overview of GCSAA's involvement in the region, particularly its education offerings and trade show partnerships in the Asia Golf Show and China Golf Show.

Business Climate in China

Andrew Edlefsen, U.S. Commercial Service

This session will focus on how business is conducted in China, with particular focus on intellectual property rights and trade agreements. In addition, an overview will be provided on the services offered by U.S. Commercial Service in China, which offers assistance to American businesses interested in exporting their goods and services to the region.

Exhibiting at Trade Shows in China

Alex Goodman and Josephine Lee

If you're interested in participating in Asia-Pacific trade shows, learn how to adapt your current trade show strategies for this new audience. This practical session will walk you through all the logistics involved -- from building your booth and locating vendors, to having your print materials reviewed and translated. Also included will be discussion of how attendee expectations are different from those of American audiences, and how you can create positive relationships from your trade show presence. In addition, Goodman and Lee will provide detailed information on how the Asia Golf Show and the China Golf Show are structured, and how you can participate in them.

Golf Course Development in Asia Markets

Greg Muirhead

In this session presented by noted architect Greg Muirhead, you'll learn what's happening in the industry from the drawing board up. What types of facilities are being built today, and what's the forecast for the future? You'll also find out what design features are in demand, and how course designs are different in the region compared with the United States.

Golf Course Construction in the Asian Golf Industry

Kurt Huseman

Learn how the construction industry works in the region, including types of projects, as well as environmental and labor concerns. Huseman will offer his unique perspective on the growth and future trends of the industry gathered from his years of experience working on projects in the region.

Being a Superintendent in the Asia-Pacific Region

Tony Taylor

How do Asian golf courses operate? What's it like to be a superintendent in the Asia-Pacific region? A superintendent working in the region will share his experiences. You'll learn about the supply chain and distribution system in the region, equipment and product availability, and how the budgeting and approval process work. He'll also provide an overview of agronomic conditions (including what's similar and what's different), and walk you through a typical day at his golf course.

Alex Goodman

Alex Goodman is the North American representative for both of Reed Exhibitions' PGA Shows in China -- the China Golf Show and the Asia Golf Show. In addition, he manages North American sales for Reed Exhibitions' marine and digital publishing portfolios. Previous to Reed Exhibitions, he worked for the Connecticut and Metropolitan sections of the PGA of America.


Kurt Huseman

Kurt Huseman is Landscapes Unlimited’s executive vice president and the incoming president of the Golf Course Builders Association of America. He specializes in the execution of turnkey golf course project delivery. Huseman is a frequent industry speaker and presenter on golf course development and construction topics.

Josephine Lee

Josephine Lee is senior vice president of Reed Exhibitions and has been working in the exhibition industry for nearly 20 years. She has spearheaded several initiatives within the company, including establishing Reed offices in Beijing and Shanghai. Today her event portfolio includes Reed's manufacturing industry exhibitions, Aluminum China and CIMES, the dual lifestyle event of 100% Design Shanghai/IHDD, and Reed's golf shows, the Asia Golf Show and the China Golf Show.


Greg Muirhead
Greg Muirhead

Greg Muirhead is senior vice president and senior designer at Rees Jones Inc. Since joining Rees Jones, Muirhead has been involved in the design or redesign of more than 60 daily-fee, resort and private facilities in North America and Asia. He was the co-designer of three courses named "Best New" by Golf Digest magazine, and has co-designed three courses that were being prepared to host four U.S. Opens. He also has served on the board of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, and was the organization's president in 2006. In addition, he is a frequent speaker, instructor and author on golf course design and planning issues.
