Media spotlight shines
on superintendents. Weather talk and major
championships garnered much of the media’s
attention concerning superintendents and golf course
conditions over the last five months. Check out

of the industry news covered by the mainstream press
in recent months.
Spread the
word: Share your environmental stewardship efforts.
Dave Phipps, superintendent at Stone
Creek Golf Course in Oregon City, Ore., is seeking
case studies about the environmental stewardship
efforts of superintendents. Phipps will host an
online monthly column at www.eifg.org
beginning early next year to present case studies
from around the nation. Your conservation practices,
IPM practices, water quality monitoring, wildlife
habitat or preservation, or related efforts will
help convey a sound environmental message to the
media and the public about golf and golf course
management. For more information, contact Phipps
at (503) 518-8873, or Mark
Johnson, GCSAA environmental programs specialist,
at (800) 472-7878, ext. 5161.
Bunker quality
has become an obsession with golfers. Based
on the experience of USGA Green Section
agronomists, complaints about bunkers now
exceed complaints about putting quality.
During this session, James F. Moore, director
of the USGA Green Section's Construction
Education Program, will address bunkers
from a variety of angles – design,
construction, maintenance and sand selection.
Please note:
This webcast was originally scheduled Sept.
6. The Sept. 6 date was canceled and rescheduled
to Sept. 11.
High-dollar clientel.
While there are 3 million sailing aficionados in the United
States who earn more than $75,000 a year, and 8.3 million
skiers in the same tax bracket, there are more than 17.3
million golfers in this category, according to the 1999
Mendelsohn Affluent Study. Golfers even outnumber tennis
players and runners in this income segment, of which there
are 7.9 million and 13.1 million, respectively. (Source:
