PCNB comment period ends next Monday. GCSAA members have less than a week to comment on the U.S. EPA's decision to ban all turf uses of PCNB. If this recommendation takes effect, it means that fungicides containing PCNB will no longer be available to control snow mold on golf courses in the United States. Use the sample letter in the PCNB action alert to submit your comment before the docket closes Dec. 4.

Localized Dry Spots on the Golf Course
Managing Turfgrass Root Systems -- South
Trees, Landscape Design and Course Character

"Localized Dry Spots on the Golf Course" will discuss the cause, detection and management of LDS caused by water-repellent soils. "Managing Turfgrass Root Systems -- South" will review the factors that affect warm-season turfgrass root growth and how it can be managed. The importance of monitoring soil temperature, as well as mowing, irrigation, cultivation and fertilization practices -- important factors in developing IPM and BMP programs -- also will be discussed.  Keith Karnok, Ph.D., a professor at the University of Georgia in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, will teach both seminars.

"Trees, Landscape Design and Course Character" will focus on golf course character analysis to determine the best environmental approach to landscape enhancement with play and maintenance in mind. This seminar, taught by professional golf course architect Craig Schreiner, ASGCA, ASLA, will cover analysis, design project support, and phasing and implementation via PowerPoint and design.

GCSAA education programs are funded by The Environmental Institute for Golf. Regional seminars are presented in partnership with Jacobsen, a Textron Co., and webcasts are presented in partnership with Syngenta Professional Products.

Space balls. Using a gold-plated six-iron and an American astronaut in the role of caddy-and-safety-holder, Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin hit a drive from a spring-like tee outside the international space station, 220 miles over the northwest Pacific Ocean last Wednesday, Nov. 22. The shot, which veered a little to the right, kicked off a planned six-hour spacewalk. (Source: www.cnn.com)
