Statement from GCSAA
CEO Steve Mona, CAE, on the passing of Hall of Fame golfer
and 1994 Old Tom Morris Award recipient Byron Nelson
“Byron Nelson was a true gentleman.
He had a tremendous impact on the game and was integral in
its growth and popularity. Speaking for golf course superintendents,
I know there is sadness among our membership. Byron Nelson
was our 1994 Old Tom Morris Award recipient and was truly
supportive of the golf course management profession.”
Nelson passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, in
Dallas.
The big business
of baby boomers. Of the 78 million Americans
born between 1946 and 1964, one person turns 60 every
seven seconds. Currently, about nine million boomers
are golfers and, now between the ages of 42 and 60,
they are about to move into the higher play frequency
and golf spending years. Over the next 20 years there
will be more golfers in the higher play frequency
years than at any time in history. (Source: NGF e-newsletter,
Inside the Ropes, Aug. 16, 2006).
Value messages.
This summer GCSAA and The Environmental Institute
for Golf produced a video
news release that was distributed to television
stations and broadcast outlets to communicate the environmental,
economic and recreational benefits of golf courses.
