Survey coming by land, air and cyberspace. Be on the lookout next week for the second phase of the Golf Course Environmental Profile survey being conducted by GCSAA and the National Golf Foundation. GCSAA members and non-members will be receiving the survey for their feedback on water use and conservation. The first phase of the survey was conducted earlier this year. Service points are awarded for those who complete the survey. Read here for more information.

Talk to your chapter delegate. The upcoming GCSAA Chapter Delegates Meeting, Oct. 13-15, will include a report on the resources the association dedicates to board of director business activities. View the report online and contact your delegate if you wish to share your thoughts prior to the meeting.

EPA extends PCNB public comment deadline until Nov. 1; MSMA comments due Oct. 10. GCSAA Education Conference registration now open

Register for the GCSAA Education Conference to reserve a seat in the education seminars of your choice. A brochure detailing the February 2007 conference and show in Anaheim was mailed with the October issue of GCM. You also can find extensive information online at www.golfindustryshow.com.

While you're registering, make sure to vote for the industry topics you'd like to learn about during the "You asked for it . . . You Got It!" conference session. The voting phase closes Oct. 27.

GCSAA education programs are funded by The Environmental Institute for Golf. Regional seminars are presented in partnership with Jacobsen, a Textron Co., and webcasts are presented in partnership with Syngenta Professional Products.

Statement from GCSAA CEO Steve Mona, CAE, on the passing of Hall of Fame golfer and 1994 Old Tom Morris Award recipient Byron Nelson

“Byron Nelson was a true gentleman. He had a tremendous impact on the game and was integral in its growth and popularity. Speaking for golf course superintendents, I know there is sadness among our membership. Byron Nelson was our 1994 Old Tom Morris Award recipient and was truly supportive of the golf course management profession.”

Nelson passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, in Dallas.

The big business of baby boomers. Of the 78 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964, one person turns 60 every seven seconds. Currently, about nine million boomers are golfers and, now between the ages of 42 and 60, they are about to move into the higher play frequency and golf spending years. Over the next 20 years there will be more golfers in the higher play frequency years than at any time in history. (Source: NGF e-newsletter, Inside the Ropes, Aug. 16, 2006).
