GCM's new online feature 'Ask the Experts' opens tomorrow. Beginning Nov. 1, GCSAA members will have online access to experts in a number of industry categories through GCM's Ask the Experts. EPA issues extended PCNB and MSMA public comment deadlines. GCSAA members have an additional 30 days to post comments to the EPA docket in response to the agency’s proposed cancellation of PCNB and MSMA from the turfgrass market. The new comment deadlines are: PCNB – Dec. 4 and MSMA – Dec. 13. Sample letters, which can be personalized, have been added to GCSAA’s PCNB action alert and MSMA action alert to help members quickly and easily submit comments to the docket. Submit your comments today!

Miller to give keynote address at GCSAA Education Conference. Hall of Fame golfer and NBC broadcaster Johnny Miller will be the keynote speaker at the 2007 GCSAA Education Conference Opening Session, Feb. 22, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif.

Education spotlight of the week

Upcoming education with John Cisar, Ph.D.

John L. Cisar, Ph.D., professor of turfgrass management and water at the University of Florida, Fort Lauderdale, is a faculty member in the university's environmental horticulture department and has taught for GCSAA since 2003. Cisar has conducted research on the environmental impacts of turfgrass mangement in Florida since 1986, focusing on factors affecting water conservation, soil water repellency, pesticide fate, nutrient leaching from landscapes and turf management.

On Nov. 9, Cisar will host a new, 90-minute webcast Taking the Mystery Out of Water-Repellent Soils at noon (CST).

Cisar will also teach a one day seminar, Bermuda Greens Management, with David Kopec, Ph.D., at the 2007 GCSAA Education Conference. The seminar will be conducted Tuesday, Feb. 20.

GCSAA education programs are funded by The Environmental Institute for Golf. Regional seminars are presented in partnership with Jacobsen, a Textron Co., and webcasts are presented in partnership with Syngenta Professional Products.

Happy Halloween! Did you know? The carving of jack-o'-lanterns originated from the tradition of carving the faces of lost souls into hollowed out pumpkins and turnips. A candle was placed inside the carvings making the faces glow. The Halloween lanterns were then placed on doorsteps to ward off evil spirits. (Source: www.pumpkinmasters.com)

Investing in the future. GCSAA supports a number of student scholarships. Most recently, 22 college students were awarded scholarship money through the GCSAA Scholars Program and two students received funding through The Scotts Co. Scholars Program.
