The Midwest Association of Golf Course Superintendents hosted their 10th Annual January Education Meeting and Wee One Foundation Fundraiser at Seven Bridges Golf Club in Woodridge, Ill. The event was hosted by 32-year GCSAA member Don Ferreri, 13-year member Dave Gelino, and first-year association member Adam Charters. Almost 100 members were on hand to support this great cause, which included both a silent and live auction. Total proceeds from the event were in excess of $50,000. A huge thank you to all the vendors and members who stepped up, donated, and bid on a wide array of products to support individuals in need in our great industry.
The event began with multiple educational presentations throughout the morning, which included Dr. Karl Danneberger from Ohio State University presenting on the growth habit of creeping bentgrass as well as disease control, and also included Doug Stotz from the Chicago Field Museum discussing the Illinois Monarch Project and how golf courses can continue to create pollinator habitats. A special thanks goes to MAGCS and Wee One Executive Director Luke Cella, CGCS, who ran both the silent and live auctions. Luke, as always, does a fabulous job raising funds for this great cause and creating excitement around the event.
The mission of the Wee One Foundation is simple: The Wee One Foundation was developed as a tribute to Wayne Otto, CGCS to assist golf course management professionals (or their dependents) who incur overwhelming expenses due to medical hardship without comprehensive insurance or adequate financial resources. Through the foundation's work, Wayne's legacy will never be forgotten.
