The Central Illinois GCSA, under the leadership of current chapter president and 17-year GCSAA Class A member Travis Williams, CGCS, participated in a GCSAA-led board orientation session with the CIGCSA board in mid-February.
The board of the CIGCSA were all present at the shop of Ironwood Golf Course in Normal, Ill., where CIGCSA immediate past president and 15-year GCSAA Class A member Tyler Bain serves as the superintendent. GCSAA's senior manager of chapter services Leann Cooper set up a GoTo Meeting and her and I facilitated the board orientation session remotely. The session focused on governance, tax status, legal duties, bylaws, board member responsibilities, financials and the GCSAA/chapter affiliation agreement.
Discussion also focused on chapter services available to board members including leadership programs such as the Chapter Manager session held at the Golf Industry Show, and the Chapter Leadership Symposium held each spring at GCSAA headquarters in Lawrence, Kan. We also discussed chapter and member services pertaining to field staff, association management and grants to name a few.
Board orientation sessions are a great way to introduce and educate board members on the various components of serving on the local chapter board. It builds camaraderie among board members and ensures each member is aware of his/her duties and responsibilities.
I would like to extend a huge thank you to the CIGCSA board for attending and actively participating in the orientation session. Thanks to the strong leadership and commitment from board members, the chapter continues to build strong relationships, develop member services and provide additional benefits.
