Can you believe June is over? I sure cannot. It went way too fast. I had fun hitting the road and meeting more members. I also had the ability to slow down a little and get to learn more about the GCSAA. I am just so impressed with all the fantastic initiatives the GCSAA is tackling. The First Green Task force was at headquarters and we are already seeing some amazing steps come from their work. The First Green is only going to get better.
The Diversity Equity and Inclusion Advisory Counsel also met to brainstorm ideas to grow this wonder profession and sport. I loved reading that the discussions were real and no holds bar. I could not be more proud to work for an organization that has DEI on the forefront and wants to have the real discussions that are necessary to move the needle.
James Beatty of African American Golfer's Digest wrote a wonderful piece called
Look Who is Making Big Time Strides in D, E and I about the Advisory Meeting and the huge steps GCSAA is taking for DEI.
I ended June on a high note. I was able to connect with the
Golf Association of Philadelphia at their team championship. The event was at Moselem Springs Golf Club in Fleetwood, Penn. One of my goals as a field rep is to connect more with the golf associations in my region. I can already tell the GAP will be a great organization to work with.First, the event was run so efficiently. I also have to give the GAP a shout out because they are working to expand opportunities for women at events. For the first time at the Team Championship they allowed women to play and had a women's division. The tournament was filled! As a golfer, I was so glad to hear everyone supporting this new approach by the GAP.
I have been connecting with Taylor Hollander before the event and she invited me out to Moselem Springs. Taylor is a GAP director and does field work with the GAP and the Pennsylvania Golf Association. She is a huge fan of the First Green and works a lot with the Philadelphia Association of Golf Course Superintendents. I learned a lot about what all the Philly golf associations and chapters are doing to support the First Green and provide opportunities for students to learn about golf careers. The support and mutual efforts are going to help grow Philly golf and golf course management. I am so glad to be a part of it!
Not only did I get to connect and play in a GAP event, I also got to play with amazing women of golf. I played with a director of GAP, a Ph.D. in Soil Science, geologist and USGA rules official, and a municipal golf course manager who helps run one of the longest continuous running amateur tournaments in the country. To see women rocking it in the golf industry makes me so happy. Watch the glass on the floor.
