Just about everything we do these days requires some type of navigation to achieve success. Sometimes we need good directions to get started, sometimes we need to modify in the middle of a trip and sometimes we need to look back at where we have been.
Our chapter leadership is elected annually. These individuals serve and, after some time, they are no longer on the board of directors and newly-elected individuals assume their role. This change in leadership is necessary to keep volunteers engaged as the chapter continues to function. There is one part of the leadership of chapter boards that does not change annually and that is the chapter executive. These positions are normally paid positions that carry out the day-to-day operations of a chapter. But, in many cases, this position does way more than just roll calls and bill paying. This person knows what has worked in the past and also remembers what was not successful. This position is the GPS for the chapter.
This week, the South Central GCSAA Executive Directors Summit will take place in Dallas, Tex. This is the first time we have been able to get all chapter executives from Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas all together at the same time. We will be discussing what works for chapters, member retention and acquisition and how to get/keep members engaged. Steve Randall and I will facilitate this meeting but the chapter executives will definitely be the ones running the two-day meeting. We hope these executives will leave this summit with a better understanding of how important their role is for the chapter because navigation is easier with a good GPS, and these executives are the GPS for their chapters.
