Equipment Managers, they're one of the most important members of any golf course maintenance staff and probably the hardest position to fill on the team. The turf equipment has become more complex in the past decade, and the demands of golfers, sports teams and landscape owners have gone up as well. In order to be successful in today's market, you have to rely on your equipment to perform every day so it's critical that your equipment manager keeps up with the most current technical information available.
The Tennessee GCSA held an equipment manager meeting in Smyrna recently that featured Jim Nedin as the speaker. There were attendees from all corners of Tennessee as well as a few participants from surrounding states. There were more than 50 equipment managers in attendance as well as representatives from the big three equipment companies. Jim did a great job of covering the technology of rotary and reel cutting units from Jacobsen, John Deere and Toro. The charts and diagrams he provided were loaded with valuable information on the proper set-up and maintenance of cutting units and he carefully explained the physics of how they operate. Even the most experienced equipment managers in the audience learned something new that day.
I had the chance to address the group and talk about the equipment manager membership available at GCSAA. I also got to talk about the Turf Equipment Technician Certificate Program (TETCP) and education that is now available through GCSAA. If your equipment manager isn't a member yet consider the Member Get A Member program to sign them up. You can get $75 towards GCSAA merchandise, education or GIS admission.
