Session focused on governance, financials, teamwork and chapter overview
I recently hosted a board orientation session with the newly elected board of the Sierra Nevada GCSA at Teal Bend Golf Club in Sacramento, Calif.
Designed for new and experienced board members, the goal of the session was to provide an overview of chapter operations as well as a more in-depth dive into chapter governance, financials, teamwork and the chapter relationship with GCSAA.
Those in attendance included Sierra Nevada President Scott McCullough, Secretary/Treasurer John Farley, Immediate Past President Bill Hamilton, Mark Callahan, Tracy Shanahan, Sam Samuelson, Jason Wolf and Chapter Executive Irene Cline.
The governance section included information on bylaws, articles of incorporation, board duties and roles as well as confidentiality and board business. It gave board members a clearer understanding of the duties and time commitment that is expected from them.
The financial section reviewed budgeting, fiscal oversight and authorization, fiscal responsibility and tax implications for non-profits. The goal is to have the chapter have a series of checks and balances that protects its best interests.
The teamwork section focused on working together as a board, dysfunctions of a team, fear of conflict, inattention to results, lack of commitment and avoidance of accountability. We also discussed hosting productive board meetings and processes to provide clear results.
Last, but not least, we discussed the chapter’s relationship with GCSAA including the affiliation agreement, chapter D&O insurance, chapter voting procedures regarding the GCSAA Annual Meeting and tools available to the chapter.
The session lasted about 90 minutes and provided those in attendance a better understanding of standard operating procedures of the Sierra Nevada Chapter and GCSAA. Numerous leave behind materials were also provided.
