Horton, Ingram, CourseCo received major awards, Stieler finishes T-2 in National Championship
The annual Golf Industry Show and GCSAA Golf Championships were held in San Diego, Calif. Feb. 2-7. Nearly 12,000 conference attendees and over 470 golf participants packed downtown San Diego and the five host golf facilities during the week-long event.
Numerous California GCSA members received recognition during the week for their efforts supporting the golf industry.
Ted Horton, CGCS, a 51-year GCSAA member and senior consulting superintendent for BrightView Golf Course Maintenance was awarded with GCSAA’s highest honor, the Col. John Morley Distinguished Service Award. The former Winged Foot superintendent and Pebble Beach Co. vice president of resource management has long been an advocate for the golf industry in California currently serving on the board of the California Alliance for Golf as well as in an advisory board role for the California Golf Course Owners Association.
Gary Ingram, CGCS at Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland, Calif., received the Environmental Leader in Golf (ELGA) Outreach and Communication Award for his sustainability efforts. Ingram is a 38-year member of GCSAA and conducts numerous outreach and field trips through Metro’s Oakland Turfgrass Educational Initiative. Ingram was named the overall ELGA winner in 2014.
Petaluma, Calif. based CourseCo received the President’s Award for Environmental Stewardship which is presented for exceptional environmental contributions to the game of golf. CourseCo has 35 properties throughout California, Oregon, Texas and Washington.
Spring Creek Golf and Country Club (Ripon, Calif.) superintendent Mike Stieler, CGCS, finished T-2 in the GCSAA National Golf Championship played February 3-4 at the Champions Course at La Costa Resort. Stieler fired a two-day total of 6 over par 150 to finish four shots back of champion Steve Gilley of The Panorama Golf Club in Conroe, Tex. Stieler is a two-time champion of the event who also teamed with fellow Central California GCSA member Glenn Matthews, CGCS at Visalia Country Club to capture the four-ball event played on Feb. 2 at La Costa. The week proved to be a great success and we thank all of those that attended the Golf Industry Show and the GCSAA Golf Championships in San Diego. We look forward to seeing everyone in Orlando next January for the 2020 version of the show.
