CAG serves as the unified voice for golf in California
The California Alliance for Golf (CAG) was awarded the 2021 Excellence in Government Affairs Award from GCSAA. The award annually recognizes a chapter, coalition or superintendent for outstanding advocacy or compliance efforts in government affairs.
CAG serves as the unified voice for golf in California, spanning the state to protect and promote the golf industry at local, regional and national levels. CAG unifies all aspects and entities within the golf industry including amateur golf associations (men, women, juniors & seniors), golf professionals, course superintendents, golf course owners and club managers, course architects and builders, management companies, hard and soft good vendors, and major equipment manufacturers.
CAG’s agenda during 2020 included relief in the legislature’s codification of new law for independent contracting for PGA golf professionals who desire to continue working as independent contractors instead of employees, creation of a white paper to provide the industry insight on Proposition 15 which would have created a “Split Role” system that would have increased property taxes on commercial and industrial properties including some golf facilities and working with California’s 58 counties to restore golf during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2021 agenda includes continued work with Governor Gavin Newsome’s office to assure golf remains open as the pandemic continues, monitoring of potential drought restrictions that will face golf during the summer of 2021 and monitoring of potential service taxes that would have a major effect on numerous areas of the golf industry.
The golf course maintenance industry is well represented on the CAG board of directors as Sun City Roseville Director of Agronomy Jim Ferrin serves as president with former GCSAA president Bruce Williams, Wilshire Country Club Superintendent Brian Sullivan and Ted Horton of Ted Horton Consulting serving as board members. Additionally, GCSANC/Hi-Lo Desert/GCSASC executive director Marc Connerly and GCSAA Southwest Field Representative Jeff Jensen serve on the CAG Legislative Committee.
The award will be presented to CAG at the EIFG/Government Affairs Reception at 1:00 PST on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
