The West Coast version of the “People’s Open” — New York’s Bethpage Black laid claim to that title on the East Coast — tees off this month as the South Course at Torrey Pines in San Diego becomes the first municipal course to ever host the U.S. Open.

In this issue of GCM, editor Scott Hollister examines what went into preparing the South Course for the tournament and the work that Mark Woodward, CGCS, San Diego’s golf operations manager, undertook to renovate the workings of the entire golf department. Woodward also stars in another feature in this month’s issue, this one a Q&A with the man who begins his job as CEO of GCSAA on July 1.

This month’s cover photo, taken by the USGA’s John Mummert, features the par-3 12th hole on the South Course.
