Call to action
I volunteered to write this month’s cover story on overcoming bad habits. Why did I volunteer? It’s not like I needed more work. Something about this story drew me in. I knew I wanted to be involved with it. And, after interviewing these four superintendents, I’m glad I volunteered for the job. In a word, they were inspirational. As a journalist, you’re often looking for inspiration. Look no further than this story for inspiration. These men all did amazing things to change their lives for the better. I’ve gained 25 pounds since my beautiful baby Evelyn was born. I weigh more today, at 215 pounds, than I’ve ever weighed in my life. As a former distance runner, this is really disturbing to me. At my height and build, I should be more around the 190-pound range. My self esteem has taken a blow. Don’t get me wrong, gaining (and hopefully losing) 25 pounds is nothing compared with overcoming alcoholism, obesity, nicotine or high blood pressure, like these men did. But we can all make a change for the better, right? So why don’t we? Well, maybe I will. I hope this story inspires some people to take action to improve their lives. And it will. Because it’s already happened — me, Seth Jones — I’m taking action right now. I’m eating better, I’m working out and taking better care of myself. I’ve decided that I’m going to make a concerted effort to live healthier for a month. You 30,000 readers will be my support group, the pressure to live up to a promise I’ve made to myself. I’ll see if I can’t lose some of the weight I’ve packed on in the past year and feel better about myself. I don’t know if I’ll succeed. Maybe I’ll make it a week, maybe I’ll make it longer than a month. I feel like I’m already succeeding, though, because I’m already doing something to benefit myself. Just like Jack MacKenzie, Joel McKnight, Teron Bay and Craig Weyandt did (see Kicking the habit). I’ll post an update on the GCM blog a month from now and let you know how it went. Look for the post in early July. And if you read these men’s stories and come to a similar conclusion, that you need to do something to improve your life and your health, drop us an e-mail here at GCM. We can help each other succeed. |
