Robert E. “Jack” Baria Jr., 74, died May 23, 2008. A 45-year member of GCSAA, Mr. Baria was born in 1934 and served in the Marines in the Korean Conflict from 1952 through 1955 before getting started in the golf course maintenance field. He worked as a superintendent at Meadowbrook Recreation Club in Charleston, W.Va., from 1962 through 1964. Then he embarked on a project to build a golf course — Fincastle Country Club in Bluefield, Va., where he worked as superintendent for 30 years. Mr. Baria was also a member of the Graham Christian Church in Bluefield. In lieu of flowers, his family has requested donations be made to The Environmental Institute for Golf, 1421 Research Park Drive, Lawrence, KS 66049-3859. Mr. Baria was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Jean Tipton Baria; a daughter, Valerie Baria Sawyer; and his sister, Jane Haynes. Survivors include four grandsons; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and his sons, Michael and his wife, Debbie Baria, and Quent, CGCS at Towson Golf & Country Club, and his wife, Theresa Baria, 1543 Redfield Road, Bel Air, MD 21015. Paul Dunn, 42, a former superintendent and GCSAA member, died May 30, 2008, from an accidental drowning. Mr. Dunn was the owner and operator of Geese Police of Western Pennsylvania, a company that provides the service of chasing geese from overpopulated locales such as golf courses and public parks. He got his start in the industry at the Tournament Players Club at Avenel, Potomac, Md., in 1986. He then attended the University of Massachusetts, where he earned a certificate in golf course management. He then worked at other golf courses as an assistant superintendent before heading to western Pennsylvania, where he got a head superintendent job at Southpointe Golf Club, Canonsburg, Pa. He then worked for Patuxent Greens Country Club, Laurel, Md., where he learned about the Geese Police business and decided to open his own precinct. Mr. Dunn was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching the Steelers and Penguins. On Jan. 26, 2008, he married Jeanne Harper, who survives. Also surviving are a stepdaughter, two brothers, a sister, a niece and a nephew. Malcolm M. Wendell, 80, died May 4, 2008. A member of GCSAA for 44 years and a lifelong resident of Attleboro, Mass., Mr. Wendell attended Attleboro High School, Brown University and Bryant College, and also served in the U.S. Navy. He worked as a superintendent at Wannamoisett Country Club, Rumford, R.I., a golf director at Highland Country Club, Attleboro, Mass., and as a superintendent at Rhode Island Country Club, Barrington, R.I. An avid golfer, Mr. Wendell was a founding member of the Attleboro Area Golf Association and won the Attleboro Open three times. He was also a member of the Rhode Island GCSA and the New England GCSA. Mr. Wendell was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Attleboro. He is preceded in death by his daughter Kimberly Welsh; sister Gloria Johnson; and his wife, Dorothy (Fisher) Wendell. His survivors include three cousins; five grandchildren; one son, Neil Wendell (Susan), who also is a superintendent; and his daughter Dee Shortelle (James), 42 Oxbow Drive, Attleboro, MA 02703. |
