In the Spotlight...

Craig Weyendt, Florida GCSA president

Tell us a little bit about your background. Where you were born, raised, etc.Craig Weyandt

I was raised in Northeast Florida, in a little town called Middleburg which is about 45 minutes southwest of Jacksonville. My father was in the Navy, and my mother a school teacher. Middleburg was a small town then. Everyone waved to each other and the door to the house was never locked.

How did you get started in the golf course superintendent profession?

My father started me mowing the yard at a young age. When he did this, I felt like I was empowered, like I was special. I enjoyed being able to do a job, look at what I had done and be proud of how good I could make something look. My first job on a golf course was when I was 15, and I think I enjoy it as much today as I did then.

Why did you join your local GCSAA chapter?

I joined my chapter for the camaraderie, to gain knowledge by shared experiences with other superintendents, to benefit from information in The Florida Green magazine and to benefit from continuing education.

Why take a leadership role with your chapter?

I was asked. It's that simple. It's also a part of my personality. I would really much rather be out in front, then trying to look over everyone in front of me.

What have been the benefits to you and your facility in becoming a leader?

Being a chapter leader has shown me my strengths and weaknesses. Mostly weaknesses! This has allowed me to become a better leader for my chapter and the club that employs me. I am now stronger where I was once weak. I think my public speaking, writing skills and overall management abilities have improved.

Anything else you would like to add?

If I had to pick just one thing about being a chapter leader that I liked least and one I liked most:
Least: The deadlines - everything that has to be done, has a timeline (president's messages, meeting agendas, etc.)
Most: The people - the great, I mean really GREAT people I have met. The cream of the crop really does float to the top, and it was nice to be there with them for a while.
