Legume Inclusion: A path towards greener golf course management

Deciding to diversify your golf course is a step towards sustainability. In this 90-minute webcast, Jay McCurdy, Ph.D., will review the benefits of bio diverse turf systems and discuss using legumes as a component of rough and out-of-play golf areas. Legumes, such as clovers, medicks, and lespedezas, are able to fix atmospheric nitrogen and share it with associated grass species. McCurdy will discuss how to cultivate legumes for benefits like insect habitat, wildlife forage and supplemental nitrogen without interrupting aesthetics and playability. You’ll also learn effective strategies to communicate to golfers and club members about the changes taking place.

About the instructor

Jay McCurdy, Ph.D.Jay McCurdy, Ph.D., is an assistant professor and turfgrass extension specialist in the department of Plant and Soil Sciences at Mississippi State University. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Plant and Soil Sciences from the University of Tennessee-Martin, a Master’s degree in Plant Sciences from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and a Doctorate in Agronomy and Soils from Auburn University. McCurdy’s research interests include turfgrass weed ecology and management. He serves as academic liaison for the Louisiana-Mississippi GCSA and is an active advisor for the Mississippi Turfgrass Association. McCurdy’s recognition for outstanding achievement includes: the Watson Fellowship presented by Toro and the Environmental Institute for Golf, the Southern Weed Science Society’s Outstanding Graduate Student Award, and the Musser International Turfgrass Foundation’s Award of Excellence.
