Wake-up call at General Session

Managing challenges in the workplace was a common theme at the Golf Industry Show General Session, despite the diversity of the accomplishments achieved by those in the event’s spotlight.

The event, which GCSAA and the National Golf Course Owners Association presented in partnership with the Rain Bird Corp. and Syngenta Professional Products, featured comments by the executives of the presenting organizations of the Golf Industry Show and also recognized excellence in government relations and environmental compliance.

But it was the stirring remarks by the widow of Leo Feser Award winner Mike Hansen and motivational speaker Marcus Buckingham that put an exclamation point on the overall message — job-related challenges must be met by positive resolve.

Sandi Hansen said in accepting the Feser award for her husband, who died in an airplane accident in January 2005 only a few weeks after he had submitted his winning article to GCM, his legacy should be the example he set in achieving the honor and the message he conveyed.

The superintendent at Thanksgiving Point Golf Course in Lehi, Utah, Hansen wrote an article, “Breaking the Glass Wall,” which appeared in the May 2005 issue of GCM and focused on the invisible but formidable barrier that often separates a maintenance department from the clubhouse. Hansen related his efforts to deal with the issue and his resulting success. It was a case study with a message for his peers.

“He would have been thrilled to be here. I’m honored to be here for him,” Sandi Hansen said.
The session also featured the 2005 winners of the Excellence in Government Relations Awards, Mike Stachowski of the Golf Course of Concordia in Cranbury, N.J., and Pat Blum of Colonial Acres Golf Course in Glenmont, N.Y., as well as the 2005 GCSAA/Golf Digest Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards and the President’s Award for Environmental Stewardship.

The ELGAs included the national public and overall winner, Alan Andreasen, CGCS at Los Lagos Golf Course in San Jose, Calif.; the national private winner, David Faucher, CGCS at the TPC at River’s Bend in Maineville, Ohio; the national resort winners, Troy Russell at Bandon Dunes in Bandon, Ore., and Anthony Williams, CGCS at PineIsle Resort and Golf Club in Sugar Hill, Ga.; and the international winner, Ben Marshall at Club Pelican Golf Course in Queensland, Australia.
