Roney named 2008 ELGA overall winner

In recognition of their commitment to environmental stewardship, Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa., and its GCSAA Class A golf course superintendent, James J. Roney Jr., have been named the overall winner of the 2008 GCSAA/Golf Digest Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards. More>>

New tournament exemption honors Sifford

Charlie Sifford, the first black player on the PGA Tour and the 2007 winner of GCSAA’s Old Tom Morris Award, has added another distinction to his illustrious collection. The Tour’s Northern Trust Open announced this week it would reserve one of its exemptions — the Charlie Sifford Exemption — for a player who represents the advancement of diversity in golf. More>>

Environmental stewardship hits Puerto Rico airwaves

Rafael Barajas, GCSAA certified golf course superintendent at Hacienda Golf Club in La Habra Heights, Calif., will join environmental reporter Susan Soltero on Puerto Rico's WALO Radio, Friday, Jan. 23 between 1-2 p.m. (Central) to discuss, in Spanish, GCSAA's environmental efforts and the positive role golf courses can play with environmental stewardship. Sticks for Kids expands to all 50 states, China

More children than ever are learning the fundamentals of golf through Sticks for Kids. The program, sponsored by the Golf Course Builders Association of America Foundation, has taken a giant leap in programming for 2009, expanding to 407 programs in all 50 states, five military bases and, for the first time, establishing the program in China.
