EIFG establishes blueprint for the golf industry’s drive toward sustainability
The Environmental Institute for Golf, GCSAA’s philanthropic organization, will create and lead "Golf's Drive Toward Sustainability," a program that will focus on providing a sustainable approach to golf facility management. Backed by the golf industry through the support of the World Golf Foundation, "Golf's Drive Toward Sustainability" will facilitate collaboration among associations and organizations to build a toolbox of resources for facilities to use as they continually strive toward sustainability. GCSAA’s CEO Mark Woodward, CGCS, who also chairs the World Golf Foundation's Golf 20/20 Environmental Committee, says the three most pressing issues for golf facilities are water conservation, water quality protection and energy conservation. The program's tools and resources will concentrate on these areas. Read more.

Noted environmental journalist to address sustainability at Celebrate GCSAA!
Simran Sethi, professor at the University of Kansas, will speak to attendees at Celebrate GCSAA!, Feb. 9, during the GCSAA Education Conference, on the topic of how golf courses can be successful in striving toward sustainability. A frequent contributor to Oprah, NBC and the Sundance Channel, Sethi also gave a presentation at the October GCSAA Chapter Delegates Meeting, where she applauded GCSAA, its members and The Environmental Institute for Golf for their commitment to transparency and continuous improvement in managing facilities. |

The board of directors recently approved the association’s 2010 budget, and among the actions was the decision to focus GCSAA’s research program on the Golf Course Environmental Profile, the recently announced sustainability initiative and monitoring of three ongoing research projects. No new research will be funded in 2010. Read more. |

GCSAA staff, members to participate in pesticide stewardship conference
Clark Throssell, Ph.D., GCSAA’s director of research; Clint Waltz, Ph.D., turfgrass extension specialist at The University of Georgia - Griffin Campus; and Lynn Childress, superintendent with The Club at Savannah Harbor, will be featured speakers at the 10th Annual Pesticide & Ag Plastics Stewardship Conference, Feb. 21-23, in Savannah, Ga. The conference, which includes a first-ever golf track program, is being conducted by The Pesticide Stewardship Alliance, which has arranged for GCSAA members in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina to obtain continuing education credits for their attendance.
