I am wondering about use of rangers on a golf course. I am taking over the management of the ranger staff due to lack of performance from my pro shop. does anybody have a job description and/or comment on how they use rangers on their golf course. I'm looking to have better customer service while incorperating course needs.

Teach them how to repair divots and ballmarks and add those to the job description. They will have ample time to assist in that area. Might pick up a ball or two less but they will live. Picking up any trash in the form of cups, wrappers , napkins or anything else they see should be included.

The job expectations for a Ranger have to come from the very top. Rangers are going to be approaching folks who do not want to be approached. The Ranger needs to know exactly what upper management wants and how they want it done. Telling a manager and ranger to enforce a 4 hour round and the rest of the rules is just sad if the Club President throws everyone under the buss when a few mucky mucks complain. I've seen that happen.

I have supervised rangers and have filled in when needed and I can say the job is difficult. I got just as many complaints because the marshals were doing there job as I did they were not doing their job. The biggest thing is to find the right personality to deal with people diplomatically and someone you can trust to work alone.

The better the staff the less supervision they need but constant two way communication is needed to ensure they know what is expected and the golf shop knows what is going on.

It is difficult to supervise the ranger crew at a daily fee from the maintenance facility when all the interaction and direction should come from the golf shop. But because the golf shop cannot communicate effectively we get stuck with the job.

The job is really all about communication. Communicate with the golf shop to find out what is going on, and communicate with the customers to make sure they enjoy their round. In between fill divots, get garbage, fill coolers and never look like your hawking balls in the woods.

We have reduced our marshal hours from 1700 hours a year to about 100. We share garbage and cooler duty with the clubhouse and the golf shop staff puts out flag events and sponsor signs. The maintenance staff or beverage cart reports and problems on the course and someone goes out to see what is going on. So many customers have cell phones they report things long before we see them.

Drink free coffee, get free golf balls, play free golf and stare at golfers and maintenance employees with an open mouth and dazed look.

Add picking up broken tees from the tee complexes to their duties as well. They can combine cleaning up the tees with interacting with the golfers and checking pace of play all from the same location and it is isn't put the golfers on the defensive like it does if they are stopped while playing the hole to advise them they are playing too slow.
