I was asked today to start having staff on weekends that we hold major outings or tournaments for one hour after the event starts, this could be as long 7 hours after we arrive on the weekend starting time....My question is how many people do this and what are your thoughts?

We do the usual, mowing, cups, rake 70 bunkers, clean and move range line, coolers, garbage and water as needed....And what are the reasons why your staff is retained longer on weekend days?

I am not sure how many people you have, My staff starts at 5AM and some come in at 9AM and all staff work an 8 hour day 5 days a week with no OT. But we keep 7 days a week program year round from 5 to 5:45 summer and 6 to 5:45 winter. 17 man staff, two Mechanics and myself. My staffs all get about 30 days per year leave and 10 of these have to be in the summer months; (Government mandate).
It is good to have PM help for water and some mowing jobs. I keep two men every day till 5:45.

Myself I take only winter Vacation at same time as GCSAA show with home leave. 4-5 weeks.

5 seasonal, myself, full time asst. super, and full time mechanic.

I'm currently short one seasonal, my course is in an area that is doing well, so no one wants or needs a job in golf maintenance. Almost all my staff except my mechanic drive 30+ minutes to work.

The course is bent/poa greens, tees, and fairways...

What is the reasoning for staying until after the event starts? What would you be doing?

I may keep my assistant and myself around for our major member event just in case something goes wrong or the pro shop needs assistance. I cannot think of any good reason for you or your staff to need to hang around for an outing. If something major goes wrong, I'm sure you have someone on call who can talk someone through the problem over the phone or come in and fix the problem. If it is something minor, I have a set of procedures on how to do things like manually flag off an irrigation head, open/close transfers on lakes, and other very specific issues. If something specific comes up, I am always the first call before they carry out any of the procedures in the book.

Similiar to Daniel unless rain is imminent. Have had to repair bunkers and squeegee the occassional green but only for major tournaments, never outings.
