I was wondering if I could maybe get some feed back on what percentage of the over all budget is for maintanece, and what is for the other guys. Right now we have an overall budget of about $815,000 my part for maintanence is $389,000. We pay $96,000 in depreciation so that leaves pro shop and snack bar with $330,000. I have made some phone calls and superintendents seem to think 60% to 65% should be for ma int. I understand that most golf courses have a unique situations and things vary. Any help would be good just trying to get a little more of the pie for us at maintanence.

    Michael:

The better question to ask is; what [u">percent of revenue[/u"> is allocated to Golf Course Maintenance. I believe this line of questioning will be related to income generated to the business as a whole from the golf course. Your line of questioning can then be the golf course is the major revenue producer and the business is only allocating [u">17% of income[/u"> to maintenance. I do applaud your management for [u">funding depreciation[/u">, just be certain that a good conversation takes place that equipment and capital projects on the course get a proportionate amount of depreciation money based on useful life and perhaps a partial return on investment based on a solid depreciation schedule.

Without knowing what type of golf course you manage and in what part of the world you're in, it's very difficult to make any decision on how your expense budget is calculated just as pure expenses of total dollars allotted to all departments ([u">based on what[/u">?).

We are a city owned golf course so things are pretty unique for us. We have some things that the city has control over and we can not do anything about it. The depreciation, we never see that money. Basically they should just call it our part of the pie if you know what I mean. We have a budget that has been over for the first three years I was here. Finally after people retiring and positions done away with, we are finally set to make profit this year. It is still to be determined if we will get that money that we profit. So basically our budget is $815,00 a year no matter what the revenue is. We pay all our bills from our register. The city pays for nothing, they just do our accounting and that's pretty much it. Benefits and retirement matching comes from the register also.
