BUILDING A STRONG AGRONOMY TEAM CULTURE

Jul 24, 2025
Golf course maintenance is more than mowing patterns and moisture management. It’s about people.

Golf course maintenance is more than mowing patterns and moisture management. It’s about people. As superintendents, you lead teams who show up early, work in an array of conditions and are critical to the success of the course. Building a strong, cohesive team culture doesn't happen by accident.

Across the Great Lakes region, I’ve had the opportunity to visit and speak with many superintendents. I’ve see just as many first-class agronomy teams operating at a high level. What stands out isn’t just the condition of the turf, it’s the professionalism, accountability and camaraderie within the team. These teams are a testament to what strong leadership and a clear culture can achieve.

In today’s labor market, retention and engagement are just as important as recruitment. That starts with establishing a culture of respect, communication and shared purpose. Clear expectations, consistent feedback, and recognition, whether formal or informal, go a long way. A simple “thank you” after a tough morning or bringing in coffee and donuts on tournament day builds morale more than most realize.

Training is another pillar. Investing time to teach not just the what, but the why, empowers team members to take ownership of their roles. Encourage cross-training, ask for input, and make room for growth.

At the end of the day, we manage turf, but we lead people. And the best-performing golf courses often have something in common: a team that believes in the mission and the leaders behind it.
